First, backup the Windows shares from the registry by following the steps outlined in this Microsoft article.

  • Disable Backup Jobs
  • Copy registry export to share
  • Before Migration, check if all files on shares are closed
  • Shutdown old Fileserver
  • Apply old Fileserver Name and IP to the new Server and reboot
  • Remove (but don’t delete) disks from old Fileserver
  • Add *.vdmk’s from old Fileserver to the new Fileserver
  • Set the disk(s) to online
  • Import share registry file on new server

Voila!  Your file shares are now migrated to the new server.
