If you’re looking to move your Windows file shares from one VM to a new VM, the steps below will get you there quickly and easily.
First, backup the Windows shares from the registry by following the steps outlined in this Microsoft article.
- Disable Backup Jobs
- Copy registry export to share
- Before Migration, check if all files on shares are closed
- Shutdown old Fileserver
- Apply old Fileserver Name and IP to the new Server and reboot
- Remove (but don’t delete) disks from old Fileserver
- Add *.vdmk’s from old Fileserver to the new Fileserver
- Set the disk(s) to online
- Import share registry file on new server
Voila! Your file shares are now migrated to the new server.
